Why Does a New Article Have No Google Ranking Yet? Separate Crawling, Indexing and Impressions
A new page must be discovered, crawled, indexed and shown for a query before Search Console can report an average position; no same-day ranking does not mean SEO has failed.

Four gates before ranking
A live page first needs to return HTTP 200 with accessible content. It then needs crawlable internal links, a correct canonical and sitemap discovery. Google must choose to index it. Finally, the page must appear for a real query before impressions and average position exist.
Do not collapse these states into one number. Not measured, not indexed and indexed with no impressions require different actions.
What to check on publication day
Verify the status code, server-returned H1 and direct answer, self-canonical, robots and noindex rules, locale signals and sitemap entry. Google's minimum technical requirements are that Googlebot is not blocked, the page works and it has indexable content. Eligibility still does not guarantee indexing.
An owner or full Search Console user can inspect a small number of URLs and request recrawling. Google says crawling can take from a few days to a few weeks, and repeated requests do not make the process faster. Use a sitemap for larger sets.
Seven-day and 28-day checks
At seven days, review discovery, indexing, first impressions and the actual queries shown. At 28 days, compare complete periods for impressions, clicks, CTR, average position and query groups. If an indexed page has no relevant impressions, examine whether the target is too broad, the answer lacks distinctive evidence, internal links are weak or another URL serves the same intent.
